The Kano Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has successfully conducted its branch elections, with Usman Umar Fari emerging as the new Chairman in a highly contested race.
Fari secured victory by defeating Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim (Secretary) of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), who has strong connections within the National NBA according to source who spoke with TheNigeriaLawyer.
According to the election results announced by Ismail Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Electoral Committee (ELCOM), out of the 541 eligible voters, 363 were verified and cast their votes. In the chairmanship contest, Usman Fari garnered 188 votes, while Huwaila Ibrahim received 162 votes. There were 9 invalid votes recorded in the chairmanship election.
It was a move by the young lawyers who thought that the cabals have dominated the Bar to the extent that only a candidate they support could win. But the young lawyers kicked against it for the first time in the branch’s history and elected someone who is never part of the cabals. The victory of Usman Umar Fari, who was seen as an outsider, has been hailed as a triumph for the younger generation of lawyers seeking to break the perceived stronghold of the established cabals within the Bar.
In the Secretary’s race, Aminu Sani Muhd emerged victorious with 241 votes, while Abubakar Tanko secured 96 votes. The total number of valid votes cast for the Secretary position was 347, with 9 invalid votes.
