Daily Law Tips (Tip 476) by Onyekachi Umah, Esq., LLM. ACIArb(UK)

WHEN A NIGERIAN CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT.

Laws govern Nigeria. The International Passport of Nigeria is produced and issued by government of Nigeria through the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The law states who should be issued such, how, when, type and how many. Anything other than what the law says is an offence.

Ordinarily, a person can have only one International passport of a country at a time. However, a Nigerian is allowed by law to have a Standard Nigerian Passport (normal international passport issued to Nigerians) and in addition, possess any of the following passports, also issued by the Nigeria;
1. a Nigerian Diplomatic Passport ;
2. a Nigerian Official Passport ;
3. a Nigerian Pilgrim’s Passport ; or
4. a Seaman’s Passport or Seaman’s Certificate of ldentification.

Apart from the above, having multiple Nigerian international passport is a crime punishable with imprisonment for Two (10) years and or fine of Two Million Naira.

My authorities are sections 9(5), 10(1)(a)(d)), 116 and 117 of the Immigration Act, 2015.
