The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) but withheld results for 215,267 candidates due to reported cases of examination malpractice. This number represents 11.92% of the total 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the exam, which took place from April 30 to June 24, 2024.
Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the Nigeria Office for WAEC, explained that the withheld results are connected to various reported cases of cheating, including the unauthorized use of mobile phones and organized cheating within some schools. He noted that the percentage of withheld results has decreased from 16.29% in the 2023 examination.
Dangut emphasized the Council’s commitment to addressing and sanctioning examination malpractice to maintain the integrity of the educational system. He stated that investigations into these cases are ongoing and will be reviewed by the appropriate committee for final decisions. Affected candidates can seek redress for their malpractice cases via the WAEC website.
Despite the issues, Dangut highlighted a positive outcome: 73.79% of candidates achieved credit or above in at least five subjects, including English Language and/or Mathematics. This equates to 1,332,089 successful candidates.
Candidates can check their results online and apply for Digital Certificates, which will be available 48 hours after the request. Results are accessible on the Council’s website, and copies of the Result Listing will be sent to schools shortly. The examination was conducted in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
