The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has strongly refuted allegations that the appointment of its new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi, violated any laws or established procedures.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the university’s Governing Council, led by Air Vice Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (Rtd), assured that the appointment process adhered strictly to the relevant laws and guidelines. The statement was signed by the Acting Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Islamiyat F. Adulrahim.

The Governing Council emphasized that the process followed all provisions set forth in the University of Abuja Act and the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2003, No. 1 of 2007, and assured the public that no procedural breaches occurred.

Addressing concerns raised during the transition, the statement noted that the Council was aware of complaints voiced by some stakeholders throughout the appointment process, which began in March 2024 when the position was first advertised. However, it was emphasized that all concerns were addressed through dialogue and collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Senate and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The statement further highlighted that the enthusiastic acceptance of Professor Maikudi’s appointment, announced on December 31, 2024, reflected broad support within and beyond the University community.

“Council appreciates that in a contest with 87 applicants, only one could be chosen, and those who were not selected must show sportsmanship and maturity in accepting the outcome,” the statement added.

The Governing Council stressed the importance of moving forward under the leadership of Professor Maikudi, who had previously served as Acting Vice-Chancellor. It expressed confidence that she would pursue her vision for the university with a focus on inclusivity and fostering a harmonious academic environment.
