Permanent Voters Card popularly known as PVC has over the years been the only means to wit the populace (citizens) can validly elect candidates of their choice into the various political offices they aspire for i.e. office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; office of the Governor of each States of the Federation; National Assembly (both the Senate and House of Representatives); House of Assembly of each States of the Federation respectively in the electioneering processes conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It enables registered voters exercise their civic right to vote in the General Elections.

The PVC was originated when the Federal Republic of Nigeria in adopting the western democratic principles, voter registration, which is a process through which those qualified to vote in election processes are identified and included in a list called the “Register of Voters” becomes very paramount. This process brings to life the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and it was issued as the sole card empowering Nigerians to vote during electoral polls.

One may be wondering that what does PVC contains? It is stylishly designed to stores information such as biometric data i.e., physical attributes, thumbprint, the passport photograph of the registrant, the names of the voter starting with the surname follows by the first and second names, residential address of the registrant and other details such as date of birth, occupation, registration center details, sex, among others.

In this new dispensation, it is obligatory for a Nigerian who has attained the age of Eighteen (18) years to register as a voter with INEC thereby completing the voters’ registration process as this helps in bringing about credibility in election process and also peace of mind to the respective voter with the assurance of free, fair and credible election.

Nigerians as a people are the most intelligent, creative, hardworking, industrious, entertaining and innovative people anywhere globally. These among others serves as the attributes imbibed in Nigerians most especially the power of the Permanent Voters Card.

With the PVC in the hands of the populace, the assertion of George Orwell’s Novel – “Animal Farm” where “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” would be in the negative because, Nigerians are all equal with the proper use of this tool. Equal to vote and decide who will pilot their affairs irrespective of their tribes, religions, education and social class etc. respectively.

Section 14 subsection 2 (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) 1999 stipulated that: “Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government through this Constitution derives all its powers and authority.” The ultimate power as to forming of any government is solely in the hands of the people of Nigeria and that is you and I.

Nigerians of various discipline either academia, artisans, etc. must be resolute in this coming election “year 2023” and forget about their egos or whatsoever reasons that has held them bound precisely and collect their PVCs; hold their power in their hands and storm their respective polling units and choose persons of their choice in order to avoid the story of “had I know”. The popular but negative assertion that “My Vote Won’t Count” should perish completely. The general lack of interest among Nigerians in exercising their civic responsibility and voting to elect those who would lead us should drastically come to an end for the greater good of everyone. Votes do counts and that is why politicians will do anything/pay to buy same.

Year in; year out we complain bitterly as to the kind of leaders governing our affairs; we have forgotten the popular biblical saying that “When the righteous rules, the people rejoice…”., this can only come to manifestation in Nigeria if we use the power in our hands which is the PVC to vote-in the right candidates. Enough is enough of the complaints; think now and act now. There is power in unity. A united people (voters) cannot be easily defeated. Remember the word of an American Political Scientist and Political Analyst Larry J. Sabato “Every election is determined by the people who show up”. If you don’t show up during an election, the right candidates with the interest of the person at heart won’t emerge. If the wrong candidates emerge come 2023 then we will only have ourselves to blame because Your PVCs is Your Power to make the impossible possible. Go get it and use it wisely for its your POWER!
