It is with deep sadness and great concern that I have read the news of the gruesome murder of Iniobong Umoren, who left her home in search of a job.

The killing of Miss Umoren is highly condemnable and shocks the collective conscience of well-meaning people.

On daily basis, our women are faced with one form of violence or the other, coupled with other social strictures that tend to limit their growth. This should not be so.

It’s heartening that the police have already swung into action and have arrested the suspected killer of Miss Umoren. The authorities should take the prosecution of the matter seriously in order to give justice to the bereaved family and the public and to deter other intending evildoers seeking to use such or similar methods to ensnare unsuspecting members of the public.

It is imperative for the human rights community to once again stand up in defence of a life so brutally ended and ensure that no stone is left unturned; that justice is not only done but seen to be done.

May God comfort the family of Miss Iniobong Umoren and may her soul rest in perfect peace.
