Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured that the 10th House will enact more legislation addressing the root causes of security challenges in Nigeria.

He added that the capacity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces would be strengthened to respond to the challenges.

A statement on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, said the Speaker made the pledge while declaring open a two-day post-inauguration retreat for members of the House Committee on Defence, jointly organised by the Committee and the National Defence College in Abuja.

According to him, security is one of the priority areas highlighted in the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House, saying it is a collective responsibility to ensure that the armed forces and police are well-equipped and adequately funded to tackle multiple security challenges facing Nigeria.

Abbas emphasised, “legislators have a critical role in ensuring that necessary legislative frameworks are in place to support national security architecture through robust legislations that address root causes of security challenges.”

The speaker reiterated that the 10th House would continue to support the efforts of security agencies through adequate funding, provision of modern equipment, ramping up training, and improving welfare packages for security personnel to carry its constitutional functions effectively.

The Legislative Agenda of the House, he said, which he unveiled on Tuesday, 14th November 2023, highlights security and states their commitment to adopting legislative measures to improve national security.

Babajimi Benson, the committee chairman, expressed concern about current security challenges in Nigeria and assured Nigerians that they were determined to carry out their legislative functions effectively, efficiently and in a manner that ensures the safety of lives and property.
