There is palpable tension in Zamfara State following the alleged murder of Magaji Lawal, a political associate of Senator Kabir Marafa, by members of the recently inaugurated Community Protection Guards.
Lawal was reportedly invited to the CPG office in Tsafe town on Saturday under suspicion of collusion with bandits.
Marafa, encouraging Lawal to honour the invitation, was shocked to later learn of his death during the interrogation.
He claimed Lawal was tortured and injuries were inflicted upon him.
He expressed support for the state government’s efforts to combat banditry but raised concerns about the alleged recruitment of individuals with questionable character into the CPG.
The state government has ordered security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada, stated that the altercation stemmed from a dispute between two factions of local vigilante groups but assured that the situation is now under control.
Nakwada stated that the government has pledged to sanction anyone found culpable in the incident according to the law.
