The House of Representatives has moved to revive Channel 35 Station of the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
The station was abandoned about 17 years ago.
Following a motion by the member representing Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, during plenary on Thursday, the House urged NTA to ensure that the Channel commenced full digital operation in 2024.
The House also noted that the operation of the Eket television station will boost economic development and create job opportunities in the area.
While leading the debate on the floor of the House, Etteh said, “The House is aware that the Federal Government invested so much funds in constructing and equipping the Eket Television Station technically to commence broadcasting.
“Sadly, this investment, which carried out testing over 17 years ago, has been abandoned and allowed to be overrun with weeds, grass, and crawling animals.”
He added that the people of Akwa Ibom State, particularly the people of Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, have appealed to all concerned institutions to ensure the Eket Television Station starts full operation for a broader news and educational channel.
In its resolution, the House mandated the committees on Appropriation and Information, National Orientation and Values to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislation.
The House also prayed NTA to live up to its mandate and “provide excellent service worldwide and project the true African perspective”.
