Students in Senior Secondary School 2 and Junior Secondary School 3 in both public and primary schools, on Monday, resumed physical presence across the state.

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State COVID-19 incident manager had during the 18th update on Coronavirus directed schools to reopen for students in JSS and SS 2 since the lockdown on learning since March 18 following the outbreak of the dreaded disease.

The governor explained that the phased assumption of physical classes by the state would allow the JS 3 students to adequately revise and prepare for their forthcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) organized by the Lagos State Examination Board, and scheduled for Tuesday, 6th October until Monday, 12th of October, 2020.

A daily independent survey of some schools in the state showed that the excited students turned up for resumption as early as 6.30 am, just as some of the teachers were also on hand to receive the students.

Newsmen monitored resumption at the Government Senior College, Government Junior College, Comprehensive High and Junior College all in Agege Area of the state.

The students were seen observing the non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 protocols as they queue up in the observance of the social distancing rule for thermometer body temperature checks and handwashing protocols.

Besides, the handwashing bays, the schools also had a row of buckets filled with water and liquid soap jars where students took turn to observe all the COVID-19 protocols.

Also on standby to monitor the exercises were teachers designated as COVID-19 Police and some prefects that also function as COVID-19 monitoring officers.

An official that spoke anonymously informed newsmen that the senior schools had 4 thermometers while each of the classrooms have been rearranged to accommodate a maximum of 30 students.

The source informed that the school, as part of the control measures, forbids food vendors from the school in the meantime.

However, a volunteer printer and resident of Agege, Mr Adeoly Olowe was the cynosure of all eyes as he ensures that returning students cross the busy road safely in and out of the , complex.

Olowe, Chief Executive Officer of Mays Printing Limited, told newsmen that he took to traffic control voluntarily about two years as a parent and having witnessed the difficulty students encounter in an attempt to cross the busy road daily.

“I resume before 7 in the morning and ensure all students disembarking from commercial buses and motorbikes cross the road safely and close by 8.30 to resume work in my office at Shomolu, ” he said.

However, contrary to the government directive to students in other classes to remain at home, many in this category that are larger to resume learning also turned up in schools and we’re asked to return home.

The had directed students that are yet to resume to continue their lessons on the various distance learning platforms (online, radio, television and WhatsApp) pending the announcement of dates for physical resumption.

“All Pre-Primary, Nursery, Daycare Centers and Kindergarten Classes and Schools in both Public and Private schools will remain closed until further announcements are made by the Lagos State Government.

“All pupils of Pre-Primary Schools in Lagos State must therefore remain at home until further notice, and continue to receive their lessons by virtual means”, the Governor said on Sunday.
