Residents of Akinola-Aboru Estate Communities in Lagos State on Saturday held a mega rally to demand for massive protests against the increment of electricity hike in the country.

The residents were seen displaying several placards to lament the hike in power bills, particularly for those in Band A.
“We don’t want Band A. Please remove it. There is no money, we don’t want a band. The inconvenience is too much and we don’t want it again,” one of the residents said.

Newsmen learnt that the residents are also planning a massive protest on Wednesday for the same course.

A source privy to the situation said: “Some Akinola-Aboru Estate Communities came out today in Sensitisation rally against Band A tariff (N227 kWh) and in preparation for mass protest on Wednesday September 25, 2024.”
The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government had earlier approved N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour tariff increment for Band A electricity consumers in the country.

The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, who made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday said the increase would see the customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

According to Oseni, customers in Band A who are those who enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply daily represent 15 percent of the 12million electricity customers in Nigeria.
