The Body of Benchers, Nigeria’s apex professional legal body, has confirmed Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, and 13 other distinguished legal practitioners as life members. The announcement was made on Thursday during a meeting held at the organization’s head office in Abuja, chaired by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).
The prestigious appointment also included notable figures such as the Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isa Chiroma; Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage; retired Supreme Court Justice Ejembi Eko; and Professor Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons in Africa. This brings the total number of life benchers in Nigeria to 170, the current cap for the next five years.
Among the newly inducted life benchers, Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN) stands tall as one of Nigeria’s foremost constitutional lawyers and human rights activists. Renowned for his vast contributions to legal advocacy and jurisprudence, Ozekhome has championed the defense of civil liberties, human rights, and democratic principles throughout his illustrious career.

Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate Leader and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters in the ninth National Assembly, has also been confirmed as a life bencher. Bamidele’s legislative career has been marked by groundbreaking reforms aimed at improving the judiciary and fostering collaboration between the legislative and judicial arms of government.
