Controversial street pop singer Habeeb Olalomi, popularly known as Portable, has faced widespread criticism and a sharp decline in his Instagram following after making contentious comments about the ongoing protests in Nigeria.
In a viral video, Portable claimed that there were no protests in his hometown of Sango, Ogun State, and criticised the demonstrations, suggesting that those participating were “bad people” deserving of the same fate they are protesting against. He mentioned that previous protests had been ignored by the government, leading him and others in his area to focus on their daily lives instead.
Portable’s remarks sparked outrage among fans and the public, resulting in a substantial drop in his social media following. Within 12 hours of posting the video, Portable lost 100,000 Instagram followers, with his count falling from 2.9 million to 2.8 million. Many fans warned that they would unfollow him if he continued making such statements, and a significant number followed through on their threats.
In a related development, Portable has taken to his social media page to reveal that he didn’t receive any monetary reward despite supporting President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during a recent Instagram live session with fans, Portable claimed that “fighting” the government was a futile endeavor, stressing that the government has nothing to lose. He said, “I supported Tinubu but I didn’t get any money. I was used but I am calm. You’re killing yourselves in the name of fighting the government. The government has nothing to lose.”
