Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has raised concerns over the continued detention of rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, despite a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja granting him bail on Monday, December 23.

Speed Darlington has been in police custody since November 27, following his re-arrest by Nigerian police in Owerri, Imo State.

The rapper was initially arrested in October after a petition filed against him by his colleague, Burna Boy.
According to reports, the Federal High Court granted the rapper unconditional bail, with the only requirement being for his legal team to present the ruling to the police legal department for processing.

The department was expected to forward it to the Force Investigation Department (FID), where the rapper is detained, for compliance.

While the legal team has submitted the court order, the police are yet to respond or act on the ruling, leaving Speed Darlington in detention.
Taking to his X account on Thursday, Adeyanju criticised the police for failing to comply with the court order, describing their actions as a blatant disregard for the judiciary.

“The Nigerian Police have refused to release Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary,” Adeyanju wrote.
