The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again called for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what they describe as a blatant violation of the rule of law by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. The call came after the controversial impeachment of the Oredo Local Government Chairman, Tom Obaseki, on Friday, which the PDP decries as a brazen act of lawlessness.

In a press conference held in Benin City, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the state chairman of the PDP, accused the APC of orchestrating a “coup d’état” against democracy in Edo. Aziegbemi claims that the impeachment was carried out by 12 imposters posing as councilors, who unlawfully stormed the council’s secretariat and declared Obaseki’s removal. He warned that such actions threaten to plunge the state into chaos and urged President Tinubu to act swiftly to prevent further escalation.

“These events are deeply troubling,” Aziegbemi said. “The APC-led government in Edo is systematically undermining democracy. We call on President Tinubu to step in and restore order before anarchy takes hold. This is not just a political dispute—it’s an outright violation of the rule of law.”

Tom Obaseki, the impeached chairman, has vehemently rejected the claims of his ouster. In a statement, he called the video circulating online, which purportedly showed his impeachment, a “criminal act” carried out by hoodlums. Obaseki insists that he remains the legitimate chairman, having been duly elected by the people of Oredo on September 2, 2023.

“These individuals who invaded the council are not legitimate councilors but thugs attempting to subvert the democratic process,” Obaseki declared. “If this impunity is allowed to stand, it sets a dangerous precedent where anyone can simply seize power. We cannot allow such criminality to threaten the foundations of our democracy.”

As tensions rise in Edo State, the PDP is calling for immediate intervention to ensure that the will of the people is upheld, and the integrity of local governance is restored. The fate of the state hangs in the balance as the APC and PDP continue to clash over the future of Oredo Local Government.
