It’s disheartening to see the Nigerian justice system being manipulated for political gain. The recent court ruling granting a senior lawyer’s request to withhold security in Rivers State is a clear example of this. It raises questions about the judiciary’s independence and commitment to upholding the Constitution.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the judiciary from political pressures. However, instances like this undermine the public’s trust in the legal system. It’s crucial for legal professionals to prioritize justice and protection for all citizens, rather than advocating for vulnerability and lawlessness.

This ruling not only erodes trust in the judiciary but also leaves citizens exposed to harm. The Constitution guarantees the right to security and protection, and it’s the duty of the government and legal institutions to ensure this right is upheld.

To address these concerns, it’s essential for the NBA and other stakeholders to advocate for reforms that strengthen the judiciary’s independence and ensure that the Constitution is upheld. The House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review has already taken steps to safeguard the judiciary from political pressures.

We need more transparency and accountability in our legal system to prevent such outrageous rulings in the future.
