Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has approved ₦77,000 as the new minimum wage for the state’s lowest-paid workers, with immediate implementation beginning in October.

The announcement came after a meeting between the state government, led by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

According to Talabi, Governor Abiodun directed that no worker in the state should earn less than ₦77,000. He emphasized that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to alleviating the economic challenges faced by citizens.

“The governor has also encouraged the private sector to adopt similar wage policies,” Talabi said, adding that a monitoring team will be set up to ensure compliance within the private sector to prevent any exploitation of workers.

State NLC Chairman, Comrade Hameed Benco, commended the governor, highlighting that Ogun State now offers the highest minimum wage among states, surpassing others that have implemented ₦70,000 or slightly higher amounts.

TUC leader Comrade Akeem Lasisi and JNC representative Comrade Isa Olude also praised the state government for its worker-friendly policies. They mentioned that discussions on pension adjustments and other consequential benefits would follow in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, lauded the governor’s decision, stating that it demonstrates the administration’s sensitivity to the needs of workers and residents. He expressed optimism that the new wage structure will enhance worker morale and encourage greater commitment to government policies.
