Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has voiced surprise at the perceived underperformance of the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu since assuming office on May 29. He emphasized that the current state of affairs in the country is cause for concern.
Onaiyekan called on Nigerians to pray for the nation, stressing that the “relative peace” currently experienced should not be taken lightly. He shared these sentiments during his address at the 10th Convention of the Catholic Men Organisation, Lagos Archdiocese, held at St Gregory’s College, Ikoyi, on Saturday.
Drawing from the convention’s overarching theme, ‘Fan into Flames the Gift of God Which Is in You,’ Onaiyekan remarked, “It is not surprising that the so-called victorious new government has not been able to perform well and has not been able to actually muster the trust and co-operation of the vast majority of the people of Nigeria.”
Commenting on the ongoing proceedings of the Presidential Elections Petition Tribunal, Onaiyekan highlighted the continued focus on legal actions.
He stated, “The courts still remain the focal point of attention. Will the courts validate the correctness of the election, or will they arrive at the conclusion, which a considerable number of individuals have already reached from the outset, that the declared election result was not sustainable?”
On the matter of delayed judgments, he noted, “The delay in court rulings is regrettable. As the saying goes, ‘Justice delayed is justice denied.’ Despite this, we must patiently await the court’s verdict.”
Speaking about the impending verdict of the Supreme Court, Onaiyekan acknowledged that acceptance of its decision is paramount, whether it aligns with personal preferences or not. He concluded, “There is no higher recourse than the Supreme Court in human terms. Ultimately, we must entrust everything into the hands of God.”
