Seven men have been arraigned for allegedly attacking the wife of Osun State Governor, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola, in the state last week.
Some hoodlums last Friday night attacked the convoy of the governor’s wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola in gridlock in Owode-Ede, in the Ede-North local government area of the state, which is the home town of the Governor-elect, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused thugs loyal to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of carrying out the attack.
But the PDP in a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Oladele Bamiji accused the security details in the convoy of beating up a truck driver which prompted a violent reaction from people at the scene.
He claimed the angry mob did not know it was the convoy of the wife of the governor.
However, the suspects arraigned by the Osun State Police Command on Tuesday were Omolola Paul, Rasaki Hammed, Soliu Waheed, Tiamiyu Basiru, Olayiwola John, Owoade Mutiu and Ibrahim Tunde.
They were charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, serious assault and malicious damage.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Asanbe Kayode, told the court on Tuesday that the accused persons and others at large caused a breach of the peace by attacking Oyetola’s wife and inflicting injuries on her aide, Benson Oyebode and one Femi Alabi, an official of the Department of State Services (DSS) attached to the First Lady.
Kayode explained that the defendants damaged the cars in the convoy of the wife of the governor, stressing that the offences contravened sections 516, 249, 451(b), 356(2) of the criminal code cap 34 Vol. II laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the offences and their counsel, S.A Gbenle, prayed the court to grant them bail.
Meanwhile, Magistrate I.R. Salami in his ruling, granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned to September 26, 2022.
