Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, has stirred controversy after being captured on video instructing his security detail to physically assault and arrest an Islamic cleric.
The incident occurred during a somber occasion – the fidau prayers for the late wife of the deputy governor, Zainab Yakubu Garba, at the deputy governor’s residence in Minna.
According to eyewitness accounts and video evidence obtained, the situation unfolded when Governor Bago, surrounded by sympathizers, called for a volunteer to offer closing prayers for the deceased. When an Islamic cleric stepped forward to volunteer, the governor’s demeanor reportedly changed abruptly.
In the video, Governor Bago can be heard questioning the cleric’s credentials, asking, “Are you a cleric?” before issuing a series of alarming orders to his security personnel. “Slap him, I say slap him very well,” the governor commanded, followed by, “Oya, go and arrest him, deal with him very well, and bring him back.”
This incident has raised serious questions about the conduct of public officials and the treatment of religious figures in the state. The governor’s actions, particularly during a solemn religious ceremony, have sparked outrage among citizens and religious communities alike.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the governor’s office regarding this incident. The public awaits a response from state authorities and clarification on the circumstances that led to this confrontation.
