Dear Colleagues,

On the 4th day of June 2020, the Nigerian Bar and Bench received with sadness the news of the passing of Sir Alfred Eghobamien SAN. Sir Alfred Eghobamien SAN was for several decades an astute lawyer and leading member of the Nigerian legal community.

At the valedictory court session held in his honour today – 9th October 2020, at the High Court of Edo State, several glowing tributes were paid to the departed eminent Learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olumide Akpata, while addressing the Special Court session in honour of Sir Alfred Eghobamien SAN, extolled the stellar qualities of the late Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The NBA President stated thus “The legal footprints of Sir Alfred Eghobamien SAN in the development of Nigerian jurisprudence will continue to adorn the pages of our law reports for many years.

In particular, at a time when Nigeria was emerging from the shackles of military dictatorship, Sir Alfred’s participation in landmark election petition cases set the tone for electoral reforms in Nigeria. He will also be remembered for bringing clarity to intricate questions of Constitutional and Succession law in a number of notable cases such as the landmark case of Attorney General of the Federation V. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar & 3 others, where the Supreme Court laid to rest the vexed issue of whether the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria could relieve his Vice President of his position without recourse to the express provisions of the Constitution.”

The NBA bids the Late Sir Chief (Dr.) Alfred Oghogho Eghobamien SAN farewell and prays that his soul rests in perfect peace.
