The National Judicial Council (NJC) has vehemently disowned a contrived letter dated July 14th, 2023, which falsely portrays itself as originating from the Council. The swift and resolute reaction from the NJC underscores its unwavering dedication to preserving the sanctity and transparency of Nigeria’s judicial system.

In a formal statement released on Saturday, Soji Oye, the Director of Information at the NJC, directly addressed the unfolding situation.

The spurious document in question falsely presents itself as an NJC communication, bearing a counterfeit signature attributed to Hon Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council.

This deceptive letter, entitled “Order of Seniority of Judges of the High Court of Kebbi State,” extends beyond mere fabrication, as it contains a recommendation to appoint Justice Umar Abubakar as the substantive Chief Judge of Kebbi State. Invoking section 10 of Kebbi State’s existing law from 1996, the counterfeit document asserts that the Governor holds exclusive authority in determining the hierarchy of judges. It erroneously argues that the National Judicial Council lacks the competence to challenge or reverse gubernatorial determinations in this regard. Additionally, the letter falsely posits that the appointment of the Head of Court or Chief Judge resides solely within the jurisdiction of the state’s Governor, masquerading it as a political prerogative.

The NJC unequivocally and categorically rejects the credibility of this forged letter. It emphasizes that the assertions within the spurious document hold no merit whatsoever. The Council firmly affirms that neither the Chief Justice of Nigeria nor the NJC issued such a letter, and no communication of this nature has ever emanated from their official offices.

In light of the unsettling nature of this incident, the NJC has extended a public advisory urging individuals to disregard the fictitious content contained in the forged letter. The Council reiterates its steadfast commitment to upholding principles of justice and transparency within Nigeria’s judicial structure.

Demonstrating a staunch response to this fraudulent act, the NJC has escalated the issue to the appropriate security agencies. The Council is resolute in its intention to meticulously investigate and unveil the identities responsible for this reprehensible act, ensuring that justice prevails.

The NJC earnestly appeals to all concerned parties, including media establishments and the public, to place reliance solely on validated and genuine sources for information pertaining to judicial affairs.

The National Judicial Council remains unwavering in its dedication to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary, safeguarding its core principles, and fostering a just society.
