The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed a partial collapse of the national power grid on Monday, assuring that recovery efforts are underway to restore supply across affected regions.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah clarified in a statement Monday night that the grid did not suffer a total collapse. She noted that the Akwa Ibom generating station was “islanded” to keep some areas connected and prevent a full system breakdown.

“It was a partial system disturbance,” Mbah said. “The entire system did not collapse as the IBOM Generating Station was ISLANDED (i.e., separated to operate independently) to continue supplying some areas through the Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132-kilovolt substations. Recovery is currently ongoing and has advanced significantly.”

The grid collapse has been confirmed by several electricity distribution companies (DisCos), including the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, and Eko Electricity Distribution Company. In a statement, Enugu DisCo spokesperson Emeka Ezeh confirmed the outage, which left TCN with zero load allocation to the country’s eleven DisCos.

At the time of this report, power supply has yet to be fully restored in parts of the country, with recovery efforts continuing.
