The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has clarified that it is not the responsibility of his ministry to directly create jobs for Nigerians.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja on Thursday, Dingyadi explained that the primary role of the Ministry of Labour and Employment is to design policies that will encourage and foster job creation, rather than provide direct employment opportunities.
“You will agree with me that the mandate of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment is never to give employment to people. Our role is to foster job creation through strategic policies and investments,” he stated.
Dingyadi also acknowledged the challenges posed by Nigeria’s large youth population, emphasizing that these concerns are being addressed through the administration’s economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He cited the recently negotiated minimum wage and ongoing infrastructural and human capital investments as key steps taken by the government to address the employment challenges in the country. In addition, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, reassured Nigerians that despite the current economic hardships, the reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration are beginning to show positive outcomes.
