The Kano State House of Assembly has approved the second reading of bills for the establishment of a security corps and an electricity generation agency, both owned by the Kano State Government.
While presenting the bills, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Hussaini Dala, stated that the establishment of these two agencies would enhance the economic development of the state.
Lawan Hussaini noted that considering how southern state governments in Nigeria have established their own security outfits, such as Amotekun, to improve internal security, it has become necessary for the Kano State Government to create its own security mechanisms.
Dala explained that the approval of the second reading of the bill to establish a state-owned electricity generation agency followed the federal government’s endorsement, allowing states in the country to generate their own electricity to boost economic activities.
The assembly stated that the officers of the proposed Security Corps would have the authority to carry locally made firearms to protect themselves.
They would also have the power to apprehend offenders and hand them over to the police for prosecution in court.
