The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched an investigation following an incident where soldiers at a base in southern Israel fell ill after consuming cookies allegedly containing hashish.
It was gathered that over the weekend, civilians visited the base and offered the cookies to soldiers, Times of Israel reports.
Three soldiers who ate the cookies experienced discomfort and were examined at the base’s medical clinic.
Ynet news site reports that the soldiers have since recovered and did not require hospitalization. Initial suspicions pointed to spoiled food, but further investigation revealed the potential presence of drugs in the cookies.
An IDF spokesperson stated, “Several reservists became ill after consuming food donations from civilians. The military police have launched an investigation into the matter.”
The spokesperson also noted that procedures for accepting food donations for soldiers will be revised moving forward.
Following the October 7 attack by the Hamas terror group in southern Israel, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, about 300,000 reserve soldiers were urgently mobilized.
In response, many people nationwide have contributed by providing food for both the soldiers on the front lines and the tens of thousands displaced from their homes.
