As Nigerians face an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis, they have taken to the internet, using humorous memes to mock President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies. Despite reports that Tinubu is upset with the public calling him “T-Pain”—a moniker linking his name to the suffering citizens are experiencing under his leadership—the meme frenzy has only grown.

One meme that’s gaining traction features Tinubu’s face on a capsule pack labeled ‘T-Pain Weight Loss Pill,’ a sarcastic reference to the hunger many Nigerians are enduring due to the president’s World Bank-backed policies. Another popular meme portrays Tinubu as Pharaoh, symbolizing how many feel oppressed by his administration, much like the biblical Israelites under Egyptian rule.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), user @chiditweets042 shared two images poking fun at the president—one showing Tinubu with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s haircut, and another casting him as Osama Bin Laden. Other memes include Tinubu depicted as Scar from The Lion King or superimposed onto images of notorious bully Sammy Larry.

Although Tinubu’s administration has yet to address the influx of these mocking memes, the president previously stated that he avoids engaging with social media due to the backlash he receives. The mockery comes in response to the soaring cost of living, especially after the removal of the petrol subsidy, which caused fuel prices to jump from N145 to N1,030 per liter.

Despite efforts to stabilize the economy, the naira has continued to depreciate, reaching N1,700 to the dollar on the black market. While international bodies like the World Bank and the IMF have praised Tinubu’s actions, inflation has continued to burden millions of Nigerians. Adding to the criticism, former Governor Peter Obi recently accused Tinubu of mishandling the nation’s resources and aggravating the country’s struggles.
