France prime minister Edouard Philippe has today announced that no sporting events will be held – even behind closed doors – before August.

In turn, this means that Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will not see their 2019/20 seasons completed.

“Major sporting events cannot be held before September,” Philippe told the National Assembly.

“The 2019-2020 season, especially the football season, will not be able to resume.”

According to RMC Sport, senior LFP officials will meet next month (May) to discuss promotion, relegation and European places.

After the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie opted to void their seasons last week, France becomes the first ‘top five league’ to follow suit.
