An Asaba-based legal practitioner and member of the Monitoring Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Asaba Branch, has called for caution and government responsibility amidst the ongoing protests.

U. A.J. Aki Esq., the former Chairman of the NBA-YLF Asaba Branch, emphasized the need for protesters to be cautious. He expressed concerns that the protest might have been orchestrated through social media, with key promoters safely at home, fueling the fire from a distance by sharing videos and chasing likes.

“It’s troubling enough that the government was given prior notice of the protest, allowing them to adopt countermeasures,” Aki stated. “The situation worsens when the protest escalates into uncontrollable destruction, vandalism, theft, and interpersonal violence, effectively playing into the hands of the authorities and providing them with grounds to sabotage the movement.”

Aki also highlighted the alarming absence of medical personnel at the protests. “Organizing a protest, knowing the risks of stampedes, chases, or resistance, yet failing to ensure medical support, is incomprehensible. This has left those of us with a conscience to pick up the pieces and rescue the injured amidst the chaos. Imagine a lawyer administering first aid while alleged protesters either run for their lives or capture the scene on their cameras for social media likes.”

Addressing those active on social media, Aki urged them to consider the gravity of their actions. “If you must come out to protest, especially in a poorly organized locality, prepare for the worst, including the potential loss of life. If you are merely an onlooker, posting and chasing clout, understand that you are playing a detrimental role. You may not feel the weight of the deaths you inadvertently encourage, as you are likely more concerned with likes and comments on your posts.”

Expressing his belief in a better Nigeria and the #EndSARS cause against police brutality, Aki called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors, and local government chairmen to address the situation more effectively. “Their leadership will be judged by how they handle this crisis,” he asserted. “We pray for better days.”

Aki concluded with a reminder for everyone protesting to be extremely careful and responsible in their actions.
