In Nigeria, the Federal government can declare any object belonging to anyone which it considers to be of historic, artistic or scientific interest or the land where such object is found, to be a national monument to be preserved in the museum, however, the owner is entitled to compensation for the value at the date of the declaration.

The owner may make an objection within 2 months of the declaration.

The bullet riddled official car in which the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed who was assassinated during the botched military coup of 1976, is preserved inside the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos.
