Paul Anaba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has declared that the era of judicial rascality in the country is over, following the National Judicial Council’s (NJC) decisive actions against judicial misconduct. Last week, the NJC suspended two high court judges, Hon. Justice A.O. Nwabunike of the Anambra State High Court and Hon. Justice G.C. Aguma of the Rivers State High Court, for one year without pay. They were also placed on a two-year watchlist. In addition to this, five other judicial officers were sanctioned for misconduct, and two court heads were recommended for compulsory retirement for falsifying their ages.
Anaba, speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, commended the NJC for its bold actions in rooting out corruption within the judiciary. He emphasized that some of the affected judges should have retired years ago, with allegations of improper age adjustments for judicial officers to extend their tenures.
“Not only were they suspended, but the NJC also ensured that they returned all the money they illegally received. This is a sign that the era of judicial rascality is gone,” Anaba stated, urging continued support for the NJC’s reforms. He expressed optimism that the agency would continue to strengthen the integrity of the judiciary and fulfill its mission to restore sanity within Nigeria’s legal system.
