A51-year-old woman, Angel Innocent, has been released from Suleja Prison after being detained for alleged treason over her involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place from August 1-10, 2024.51 YEAR OLD WOMAN

Innocent was among several protesters accused of terrorism-related charges, including treason, due to their involvement in the recent demonstrations against President Bola Tinubu’s government.

The protests, driven by economic hardship, corruption, and perceived mismanagement, erupted across the country, with calls for systemic change and accountability from the government.

However, despite the severity of the charges, Innocent has maintained her innocence, asserting that she was exercising her constitutional right to protest peacefully.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations, activists, and legal representatives have also condemned the arrests and trials as an infringement on free speech and political dissent.

Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian human rights activist and the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, announced her release via his official X handle on Friday, disclosing that Angel regained her freedom from Suleja Prison.

He said, “This night, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria activist Angel Innocent, 51, released from Suleja prison after fulfilling (perfecting) stringent bail conditions. She remains remain undeterred. #RevolutionNow.”

Similarly, Take It Back Movement, one of the organisers of the protests on Saturday, posted on its X account, “Another #EndBadGovernance advocate Madam Angel released! Others await processing. We remain relentless in our fight for justice & against oppressive regimes. #RevolutionNow #FearlessInOctober.”

Earlier on Friday, SaharaReporters reported that Abayomi Abiodun, one of those arrested, detained and tried for treason over the 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests had been released from Kuje prison. Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow movement, via his official X handle on Friday, disclosed that Abiodun was released after meeting stringent bail conditions. He added that other detainees were still undergoing processing for their eventual release. “Today, Abayomi Abiodun, an advocate against bad governance in Nigeria and a victim of the @officialABAT treason hoax, has been released from Kuje prison after fulfilling stringent bail conditions. “Others are currently undergoing processing, as we remain committed to ending bad governance in Nigeria and securing their release and ending the regime of a fascist,” he said.
