LAGOS – A fertility specialist, Dr Taiwo Orebamjo, Medical Director , Lifeshore Clinics, Lagos has advocated the use of donor sperm to tackle the issue of male infertility which is becoming a huge problem across the world, especially in Nigeria.INDEPENDENT reports
Orebamjo who made the recommendation explained that treatments are available to address infertility in men, giving an example with low sperm count, which he said can be treated through injection.
The seasoned Consultant obstetrician and Gynecologist spoke while addressing journalists in Lagos in a media briefing to mark fertility clinic’s five year anniversary.
He said, “There are treatments available for men who are affected by infertility; we have an injection for men who have low sperm count. If at the end of the day the sperm count is totally absent, there are donor facilities that are available and that is not really something that is embraced in our environment, using donor sperm, but that is also an alternative that is available.”
The Medical Director of Lifeshore Clinics said, sperm donation is the provision by a man of his sperm with the intention that it be used in the artificial insemination or other ‘fertility treatment’ of a woman or women who are not his sexual partners in order that they may become pregnant by him.
The man is known as a ‘sperm donor’ and the sperm he provides is known as ‘donor sperm’ because the intention is that the man will give up all legal rights to any child produced from his sperm, and will not be the legal father.
“However conception is achieved, the nature and course of the pregnancy will be the same as one achieved by sexual intercourse, and the sperm donor will be the biological father of every child born from his donations,” he stressed.
According to him, Lifeshore Clinics has documented many achievements over these past five years with a record of over 50 babies.
He said, “We have had over fifty babies over the past five years. Our success rate is between one in two and one in three which is comparable anywhere else in the world. So I am really very happy and satisfied with our achievement and I pray God continue to help us the way he has helped us till date and we will continue to try our best.
“I say with pride because of the feeling of satisfaction that I have personally experienced in being able to bring tremendous joy to couples who have been trying to conceive for many years and have achieved their dreams through our services.”
He said that Lifeshore Clinics commenced operations in December, five years ago with the sole purpose of helping couples that are having difficulty with conceiving after many years of trying on their own. Often times, these couples have been everywhere and taken advantage of many times over.
The medical luminary said, “Our aim at Lifeshore Clinics is to ease their pain and anguish and provide hope for them, whatever their situation and I am happy to say that through our efforts and services over the past five years been able to fulfil the dreams of many couples who have placed their trust in us at Lifeshore Clinics. Many of them have become pregnant with singleton babies, twins, triplets and even quadruplets and have gone on to deliver beautiful healthy babies.
“Our patients range from women who have been diagnosed with blocked tubes, uterine fibroids, absent menses, endometriosis, Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), to men with low sperm count-oligospermia, or no sperm at all – azoospermia.
“Lifeshore Clinics boasts off excellent friendly medical and nursing staff and seasoned well-trained embryologists and this is reflected in our many treatment successes.
“My thanks go to our patients who have placed their confidence and trust in us and supported us over the years.”
