The police have provided the findings of their investigation into the viral video of a dispatch rider accused of stealing a child in Lagos.

A statement on Monday by Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, ordered a probe of the footage.

The spokesman disclosed that detectives sent to the scene discovered that the child was not stolen.

It was also confirmed that the rider did not keep him in the courier box as alleged by a mob.

Ajisebutu said the child’s mother, Lovina Bitrus, was contacted and she admitted the child was taken away with her consent.

She recalled that the 10-month-old baby, fond of the rider who is a relative, was crying uncontrollably when he (rider) wanted to go pick something nearby.

“To pacify the baby, his mother allowed him go with the rider. Passersby who saw the child with the rider along Sangotedo area in Ajah became suspicious.

“The citizens concluded that the child might have been stolen and raised the alarm which attracted others.

“The mob subsequently pounced on the rider, beating him without finding out the truth”, the statement added.

The dispatch rider identified as Williams Tadule was said to have been rescued by the Chairman of Sunview Estate in Sangotedo.

The police appealed to members of the public to stop jungle justice, warning that such actions have grave consequences.
