She directed the release of the inmates during her visit to the five medium security custodial centres in the state and three other satellite custodial centres.
During the visit, she reviewed cases of awaiting trial inmates with minor offences, most of who had spent five to six years without trial and released 26 inmates while seven others were released on bail, totalling 33.
Briefing newsmen at the end of the two-day exercise at the Bauchi Medium Security Custodial Centre, Justice Umar noted that those released had spent over five years in custody without their cases being duplicated and transmitted to the state’s Ministry of Justice for legal advice.
