The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) congratulates Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun on becoming the second female justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

A statement by AWLA’s Country Representative, Falilat Oluwatoyin Orire reads:

“We will like to extend our congratulations to Hon Justice Kudirat Motomorin Kekere-Ekun on her swearing in as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria. This is hugely symbolic. We are deeply inspired by her intellect and her leadership acumen – important characteristics that we know she has brought with her to the highest court in the land.

Her academic credentials, her judicial experience and her legal expertise prove that she is eminently qualified for this position. We celebrate this milestone and are confident that she will continue to protect the rights of individuals under the rule of law through strong diverse, committed judicial leadership, fairness and equality in the courts; and equal access to justice.

We reiterate that for government to function at its best, our legislators, executives and judges must reflect the people for whom our government is intended to serve. Women, in particular, have always had a powerful presence in our society and play an integral role in uplifting and strengthening our society. Hence, we have become indispensable leaders in all corners of our nation.

As Justice Kere-Ekun takes the front seat on the Supreme Court, we wish her the best and extend our unwavering support.”
