The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe Branch, at its extra ordinary general meeting duly convened and held on the 14th day of August 2024 to address the growing concerns among the residents of Gombe State regarding recent public statements made by His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. It has come to our attention that certain remarks made by the Governor have led to increased tension and unrest, particularly concerning the decision not to implement the approved minimum wage of NGN70,000.00 and the threats regarding participation in the just concluded ENDBADGOVERNANCE protest among others.

The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe Branch, respects the office of the Governor and acknowledges the complexities and challenges that come with leadership. However, we are deeply concerned about the potential impact of unguarded statements on the peace and stability of our beloved state. As legal practitioners and custodians of justice, we feel it is our duty to promote harmony and constructive dialogue within our community.

Our Concerns

Public Discontent: The decision not to pay the approved minimum wage which coincided with the commencement of nationwide end bad governance protest has understandably caused frustration and disappointment among the residents of Gombe State. The subsequent public protests are a testament to the heightened sensitivity around this issue.

Use of Words: Leadership requires not only making tough decisions but also communicating those decisions with empathy and respect. Recent statements attributed to His Excellency have been perceived as dismissive and inflammatory, exacerbating public discontent.

Impact on Peace and Stability: The current climate of unrest poses a significant threat to the peace and stability of Gombe State. As stakeholders in the state’s welfare, we are keenly aware of the need for calm and measured communication from our leaders.

Our Appeal

Moderation in Communication: We respectfully appeal to His Excellency to adopt a more moderate and considerate tone in public statements. It is crucial that communications from the Governor’s office reflect an understanding of the residents’ concerns and a commitment to addressing them constructively.

Engagement and Dialogue: We urge the Governor to engage in open dialogue with the residents, labor unions, and other stakeholders to find amicable solutions to the wage dispute and other pressing issues. This approach will help build trust and foster a cooperative atmosphere.

Leadership by Example: As the highest representative of the state, the Governor’s conduct and words set the tone for the entire administration. We encourage His Excellency to lead by example, demonstrating patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of all Gombe State residents.

Conclusion

The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe Branch, is committed to supporting the government in its efforts to ensure the prosperity and stability of our state. We believe that through measured and thoughtful communication, His Excellency can help bridge the gap between the government and the people, fostering a more harmonious and productive relationship.

We remain hopeful that His Excellency will consider our appeal in the spirit of mutual respect and shared commitment to the betterment of Gombe State.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Signed
