Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Ify Obinabo has called for the full prosecution of 60 years old Boniface Onyekwere, who raped a 12-year-old girl.
Onyekwere, a pastor with the Deeper Life Bible Church and a lecturer with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka had last month allegedly raped his house help severally, causing her to jump down from their two-storey apartment to escape the act.
The Commissioner who spoke during a courtesy visit on her by a group; Ultimate Business Women and Farmers Association of Nigeria said nothing will assuage the anger of the people except Onyekwere was prosecuted.
She said: “We have commenced sensitization programs for women, girls and young boys to avert abuse of the younger generation.
“We also call on groups and faith-based organizations as well as churches to teach morals and embrace the culture and traditions of the society for posterity. I’m calling for full prosecution of the suspect, to serve as a deterrent to others.”
Speaking earlier the leader of the women’s organization, Nkiru Nwagbo contended that the body will leave no stone unturned until the victim gets justice.
“We do not know what our society is turning into and that is why we are doing all that we can to get justice and this would serve as a lesson for those who may want to continue in these inhumane activities” she added.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command had in an earlier visit by the group said the command is carrying out more investigation on the matter.
He said the suspect has already been remanded in a correctional centre while advising parents and guardians to be mindful of the people they hand over their children to as housemaids.
