The Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) speaking through it’s National President, Ikem U.Uchegbulam Esq., has applauded the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his unwavering commitment to establishing a Disability Rights Commission. The ALDIN president said this initiative marks a pivotal step toward fostering inclusive governance and equitable opportunities for persons with disabilities across Enugu State
ALDIN has played a key role in advocating for the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Law, which was signed into law by former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on April 23, 2023. The current governor’s dedication to building on this legacy with a dedicated commission is both commendable and encouraging.
The proposed Disability Rights Commission aims to create a comprehensive framework for promoting the rights, welfare, and integration of persons with disabilities in the state. ALDIN believes the commission will be instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, including stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion. By fostering advocacy, resource allocation, and policy development, the commission is poised to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities in Enugu State.
ALDIN has pledged its full support for the establishment of the Disability Rights Commission and urges Governor Mbah to expedite its implementation. Additionally, the association highlights the necessity of appointing individuals with disabilities to key government positions, as mandated by the law. This will ensure representation and enable persons with disabilities to participate in shaping policies that impact their lives.
Through these progressive initiatives, Enugu State has the potential to emerge as a leader in inclusive governance, setting a benchmark for advancing disability rights not only in the state but throughout Nigeria. ALDIN expresses its sincere gratitude to Governor Mbah for his commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities and looks forward to collaborating with the state government to realize these vital initiatives.
Together, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to thrive.
