The Catholic archbishop of Benin, archdiocese, most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, has urged lawyers to render more pro-bono services for indigent persons in prisons.
The archbishop made this remark on Friday during the Votive mass of NBA Benin held in commemoration of their new legal year.
The mass also called the Red mass was celebrated by his Grace, most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, the Archbishop of Benin Catholic Archdiocese at St. Paul’s Catholic church, Airport Road, Benin City.
Speaking at the service, most Rev. Dr. Augustine, urged judges to be true ministers in the Temple of Justice and to play a major role in the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.
Amongst legal minds in attendance were High court judges in Edo State, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Lawyers and they’re well-wishers.
At the event, legal luminaries were led in thanksgiving by judges of the high court who danced to the altar to give thanks to God
Solomon Asemota SAN, in his vote of thanks at the occasion, urged lawyers to make the Red mass an annual event while Prof Eric Okojie, president of Catholic Lawyers Association, appealed to the archbishop to reach out to his brother Bishops to make the mass a national event to be celebrated at all dioceses in Nigeria.
