1. Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, said the country cannot afford to fail its children. This was contained in a message released by his media office in Abuja on the occasion of 2021 Children’s Day.
2. The Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) began public hearing yesterday, in the various geo-political zones across the country, with renewed clamour for creation of additional states in the South East, state police and power devolution among other demands listed by the State governors and other stakeholders.
3. The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) has charged the Federal Government to immediately take steps towards addressing the socio-economic, political and security challenges threatening the existence and unity of the country. This was contained in a communique jointly signed by Kabiru A. Yusuf, President NPAN and President NPO; Mustapha Isa, President of NGE, and others.
4. Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, yesterday, said Nigerians are desirous of a national dialogue to chart a new course for the country. He stated this while receiving members of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution led by Deputy Senate Majority Leader and Senator representing Ondo North Senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Borrofice.
5. The Court of Appeal, sitting in Benin, yesterday, upheld the ruling of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal against the Action Democratic Party (ADP), and reaffirmed the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki at the 2020 election. Justice, M.A. Owoade delivered the judgement.
6. Delta State Government, yesterday, said it is yet to receive from the FG the £4.2 million returned by the United Kingdom. Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Olisa Ifeajika, in a statement in Asaba, said the money had not arrived the state government’s coffers.
7. A Nigerian soldier identified as Stephen and attached to 6 Battalion in Akwa Ibom State has been arrested for allegedly killing one Enobong Jimmy, who offered him a ride from Port Harcourt in Rivers State to Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom.
8. Students of the College of Health and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti, on Wednesday, went on rampage, following the collapse of about 100 of their colleagues after allegedly inhaling chemicals during a fumigation exercise on the campus. The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Filani, confirmed the incident.
9. Unknown gunmen, on Wednesday, abducted the National President of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Peter Timothy Ibifa. The IYC Publicity Secretary, Ebilade Ekerefe confirmed the incident to newsmen yesterday.
10. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, have decried the rising spate of insecurity in Nigeria, warning that the existence of the country is under threat. They spoke on Wednesday during a summit organised by the House’ Special Committee on Security chaired by the Speaker.
