The Anambra State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association has backed the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria.
The association gave the state governor, Willie Obiano, a seven days’ ultimatum to implement financial autonomy for the judiciary in the state or face mass action.
Speaking on behalf of the eight NBA branches in the state, Kingsley Awuka said the committee of chairmen of the state NBA branches had noted and was worried about the ongoing nationwide strike by JUSUN.
“The committee is concerned that despite the clear and unambiguous provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which provides for and preserves the autonomy and independence of each of the three arms of government at all levels, the executive arms of the 36 state governments have wilfully refused and/or neglected to implement the constitution which they all swore to uphold,” Awuka said.
He urged Obiano to immediately commence the implementation of the constitutional provisions relating to the financial autonomy of the judiciary in the state.
