Read the statement below:
Dear Senior Advocates and Distinguished Colleagues,
Re: Arrest & Detention of Daniel Makolo, Esq.
Following the information on the detention of Mr. Daniel Makolo, I led a delegation of colleagues and our Human Rights Committee to the Police Division, where he is being detained.
Our findings reveal that:
Mr. Daniel Makolo wrote a petition to the Minister of Interior dated 6th June, 2020, to the effect that the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) has no legal powers under the law to extend the statutory tenure of public servants.
Daniel Makolo was arrested on the 10th August, 2020, on the basis of a petition for defamation of character.
While the detention of Mr. Makolo is predicated upon an order of a Magistrate’s Court granted on the 11th August, 2020, the coincidence of a Petition to the Hon. Minister and the arrest of the Petitioner shows that there is more to the incident.
We unequivocally condemn the use of security agencies to intimidate or muzzle Nigerian citizens. We have assembled a team of lawyers to make the necessary representations for Mr. Makolo.
The machinery of the State should not be unjustly used against innocent citizens. Injustice against one is injustice against all.
