NBA Dissolves Election Committee Of NBA Asaba, Sets Up Caretaker Committee

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2020 Branch Elections Appeals Panel (Western Zone) considered an appeal on the constitution of the Branch Election Committee and reached the decision that Election Committee of Asaba Branch was constituted in contravention of Article 10 (3) of the Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches and recommended that the said Election Committee be disbanded/dissolved.

This is contained in a statement made available to LEGALDESKNG and signed by Mr. Jonathan Gunu Taidi, Esq., NBA General Secretary.

Furthermore, it was noted that Afam Kris Nmah, Obianua Wilson Chibuogwu, and Chukwuma Henry Oseyenim shall constitute the Caretaker Committee to take charge of the leadership of the Branch in the interim, for a period of 3 months.

DISSOLUTION OF ELECTION COMMITTEE AND CONSTITUTION OF CARETAKER COMMITTEE FOR ASABA BRANCH
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2020 Branch Elections Appeals Panel (Western Zone) considered an
appeal on the constitution of the Branch Election Committee and reached the decision that Election
Committee of Asaba Branch was constituted in contravention of Article 10 (3) of the Uniform Bye-Laws for
Branches and recommended that the said Election Committee be disbanded/dissolved. The said
recommendation was accepted and conveyed to the Branch Chairman by a letter dated 12th June, 2020
wherein he was directed to take steps and reconstitute the Branch Election Committee.
Article 17 of Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches provides time lines within which the Election Committee shall
perform its functions without any provision for abridgement of time.
Following the expiration of the tenure of the Executive Committee of Asaba Branch of the NBA on
25th June, 2020 the President, Paul Usoro, SAN has constituted a Caretaker Committee to handle the affairs
of the Branch in line with Article 11 of the Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches for a period of three (3) months
with effect from 25th June, 2020.
The Caretaker Committee may co-opt such members as it deems necessary. The Committee is composed of
the following:

Afam Kris Nmah
Obianua Wilson Chibuogwu
Chukwuma Henry Oseyenim

Members of the Branch are advised to cooperate with the Caretaker Committee as it pilots the affairs of the Branch.
