The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured that the upper chamber of the National Assembly will play an active role in the burial ceremonies of former Senate President, Dr. Joseph Wayas.
Akpabio made this commitment when a delegation of Cross River State leaders, led by former Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi, paid him a courtesy visit to invite the Senate to participate in the burial.
Describing the upcoming events as “a celebration of life,” Akpabio pledged the Senate’s full involvement.
“We will be part and parcel of all the ceremonies. As the 10th Senate, we are delighted to participate,” Akpabio said.
He announced plans to hold a valedictory session for Dr. Wayas on November 28, 2024, after which the Senate would join the “Night of Tributes” in Calabar.
Akpabio commended the delegation for showing respect to the National Assembly and emphasized the Senate’s commitment to making the ceremonies a success.
“Your visit is like icing on the cake. It strengthens our resolve to own this event and collaborate with you. Dr. Wayas was a trailblazer, a man of style, candor, and charisma, who left a significant legacy as Nigeria’s first Senate President from the South-South region,” he said.
Chief Kanu Agabi appealed to the Federal Government to take over the burial arrangements for Dr. Wayas, noting that the Cross River State Government had struggled to manage the process.
“Let the government bury Joseph Wayas. The delay since his passing on November 30, 2021, has made it seem as though he has died multiple times,” Agabi lamented.
He compared the situation to the prolonged burial delays of historical figures like Marcus Garvey and Mobutu Sese Seko, emphasizing that such delays often accompany the legacies of great men.
Dr. Joseph Wayas, who passed away in November 2021, was a prominent statesman and the second Senate President of Nigeria, serving from 1979 to 1983. Known for his charisma and leadership style, his burial is expected to draw attention as a significant national event.
The Senate’s involvement underscores its respect for Wayas’ contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and governance.
