In a major crackdown on crime, Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested 177 suspects, including four accused of organ harvesting and ritual killings, following a month-long operation aimed at tackling violent crime across the state.

During a press briefing in Abakaliki on Friday, the Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu disclosed that among the 177 detainees — 162 men and 15 women — 92 suspects have already been arraigned, while investigations continue for the rest.

Ukandu emphasized the command’s commitment to curbing criminal activities, highlighting strategic efforts led by CP Anthonia Uche-Anya to ensure a safer environment for residents.

The organ harvesting ring was exposed following the reported disappearance of Idenyi Chikezie, who was last seen on September 9 en route to Lagos for business.

Through a rigorous investigation, police uncovered a sinister scheme in which Chikezie and two other victims, Chibu Odii and Eze Fabian, were allegedly murdered for their organs, intended for a ritual cure for Down syndrome.

The suspects, identified as Innocent Elebe, Eze Elechi, Obinna Nwanguru, and Oda Peter, confessed to the killings, leading police to recover the bodies of Chikezie and Odii, while efforts are underway to locate Fabian’s remains.

The sweep also netted suspects involved in kidnapping, robbery, and firearms possession.

The Ebonyi State Police Command reassured the public that it would remain relentless in its pursuit of justice and continue efforts to ensure a crime-free Ebonyi.
