The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the recall of Nivea BLACK & WHITE Invisible Roll-on deodorant (50ml), marked “48H Protection in African Climate” and bearing batch number 93529610.
In a press statement released on its X handle on Thursday, the agency stated that it followed an alert from the European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX), which flagged the product for containing a banned chemical.
The deodorant is reported to contain 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), a substance prohibited in cosmetics due to its potential harm to the reproductive system, risks to fetal development, and the likelihood of causing skin irritation and burns.
NAFDAC advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise extreme caution by avoiding the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the specified Nivea Roll-on with the affected batch number.
Individuals in possession of the product are urged to discontinue its use and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency also encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions experienced with this or other regulated products. Reports can be submitted to the nearest NAFDAC office, via email at [email protected], through E-reporting on www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety app available on Android and iOS.
