The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has approved the Kogi State Government’s proposal to build an international airport in the Zariagi community.
The approval, conveyed through a letter dated October 9, 2024, was announced on Friday by Kingsley Fanwo, the State Commissioner for Information and Communications.
Fanwo emphasized the commitment of Governor Usman Ododo’s administration to ensuring the airport’s timely completion, adhering strictly to regulatory standards. He highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting that the airport would serve ten other states, ease traffic on the Lokoja-Abuja road, and reduce congestion at Abuja’s International Airport.“The Ododo administration has prioritized building an international airport to position Kogi as an aviation hub. The state’s central location gives it a unique advantage to harness the aviation market,” Fanwo said.
He also stressed the airport’s potential to boost the state’s economy, create jobs, and elevate Kogi’s profile globally. “The Governor is committed to hiring top professionals to guarantee the project’s success. Aviation is an industry built on trust and standards, and we are focused on meeting those expectations,” he added.
Fanwo expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Aviation Minister for approving the project. He revealed that the airport would also include cargo facilities to strengthen Kogi’s economic impact.
“The administration of Governor Ododo remains committed to implementing impactful projects that build on the progress made over the past eight years,” Fanwo assured.
He further noted that Zariagi, which already has an airstrip, was chosen for its strategic value, and aviation officials have expressed satisfaction with the site and project plans.
