Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has dismissed reports claiming that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the National Assembly amid alleged impeachment moves against principal officers in the Senate.

During a plenary session on Wednesday, Akpabio addressed his fellow lawmakers, calling the reports “fake news” and emphasizing that there were no ongoing controversies within the upper legislative chamber.

Akpabio expressed concern about the increasing prevalence of false information in the media, particularly online. He lamented, “Fake news is gradually taking over the media space. There seems to be no limit to what online publications can fabricate. The notion of any impeachment move against principal officers is completely false, and we are all here in the National Assembly without any such issues.”

Highlighting the role of artificial intelligence in spreading disinformation, the Senate President noted, “I learnt that they could click an AI and news will start trending to drive traffic, and I am sure the traffic for this fake news is massive by now.”

To address the situation, Akpabio referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Special Duties, instructing them to investigate the source of the false report. He directed the committee to present their findings to the Senate within 24 hours.
