The Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission has denounced the ongoing detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, as a demonic plot against the Igbo people. In a statement signed by President/Coordinator Rev. Tony Uzo Anthony and General Secretary Apostle Tony Osuji, the group accused South-East governors of conspiring to keep Kanu imprisoned for political gain and called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, pressure groups, and the global community to unite in condemnation.
The statement highlighted concerns regarding the legal proceedings surrounding Kanu, noting that the presiding judge has failed to comply with a Supreme Court ruling. The group pointed out that Kanu remains unlawfully detained while others guilty of serious offenses have been released. They referenced a prior admission from the same judge, who acknowledged that the charges against Kanu were politically motivated and unfounded, questioning her motivations for continuing his prosecution.
The coalition expressed belief that South-East governors are conspiring to maintain Kanu’s detention to facilitate political agendas, particularly in light of the upcoming elections. They accused the governors of scheming to detain Kanu until next year, with the intention of later releasing him to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for votes in the South-East and South-South regions.
“We appeal to our brothers and sisters in the diaspora to reach out to officials in Kenya, Britain, the South-East governors, and the President to advocate for Kanu’s release, emphasizing that he has committed no wrongdoing,” the statement urged.
The group criticized the South-East governors, suggesting they are benefitting from the instability in the region while failing to seek dialogue with Kanu to promote peace. They concluded by urging all Nigerians to reject the injustice against Kanu and hold accountable those involved in what they termed a “demonic scheme” against the Igbo people.
